It must have been a bit of a shock for John to be slippered when he’d done nothing wrong. I hope that if he was ever sent to the headmaster for a slippering after that the head remembered that John had four whacks in credit already. It would seem that John didn’t protest when he was told to bend over. Perhaps he was many of the youngsters back then who was used to bending over for spankings at home. Plenty were and at home it often given across the bare bottom.

And may I please say a personal and somewhat belated welcome to the Forum.

A most unfortunate occurrence.  Some may wonder why you bent over as instructed instead of pointing out that you were merely there to deliver a message, but possibly this was in the era when at age 10+ you didn’t argue with any adults and certainly not with Headmasters.  I remember it well!

Is my memory playing tricks or was one of the lads caned by Mr Gryce the Headmaster in the Ken Loach film ‘Kes’ merely there because he’d been sent to the Headmaster with a message?  The little lad caned last I think.  I haven’t got time to locate a clip of the caning.  Hopefully someone will tell me if I’m wrong and post the clip if I’m right.  Sadly I have to confess that my only clear memory of Kes is the young lady teacher in a short skirt glimpsed ascending a staircase in one shot – or was that another film? 

I think the only fair outcome would be for John to have been allowed to commit another spankable offence without redress. At least that would have evened things up.

That would seem fair but I doubt the headmaster would see it that way if he committed another offence.  I remember how different lads accepted corporal punishments. I remember one lad in my form skived off a lesson, he was missed and at registration next morning our form master gave four hard slipper whacks. The boy already knew he’d been missed and would be punished but he didn’t seemed too concerned. He was called to the front and bent over a desk. He took the whacks without a murmur. After registration he told us a spanking from his dad was far worse.

Thank you all for the welcome and your comments , First of all in reference to the film Kes, The young boy was sent to Mr. Gryce with a message but the older boys “dumped” their packets of cigs on him and when Mr Gryce searched the boys they were found on him, the boys were caned for real in the film and paid 10 shillings (50 new pence) per stroke which was a lot in those days, The young boy had glazed eyes and understandably after the scene had ended he cried by then the camera had been stopped.

I can well understand why you bent over when you were told. We were taught to do as we were told in the past. Were you used to bending over at home too?

In reference to me being slippered by mistake! At The Junior school I went to we were bought up (as you could say) with the slipper and the cane and if /when you were told to bend over you did so.  Our second form teacher (we were age 9) caned every boy on the class in the first two weeks with “Two Taps”,  When it was my turn I was called out and told to touch your toes John I was nervous as I touched my toes to be caned my Mr. K.  he swished the cane down but if felt like a light tap then he swished the cane down again and I felt a light tap on the bottom followed by up you get John,  IF deserved he would cane , slipper . even spank for real.  and all the teachers did this last boy back from play time had to touch their toes for one “stinger” of the slipper or cane.  All the parents and even pupils thought highly of Mr. K as he was a great teacher, even if he punished you of real.

It was the same for me, my widowed mother always said, if I was caned or slippered in school, that I must have deserved it. My junior school rarely used CP but when I started at grammar school in 1958 the risk of the cane or slipper was there daily. I was rarely spanked at home, what about you?
